Programs and Facilities

  • Menís Emergency Shelter (331 beds)
  • Menís Day Shelter (Can accommodate up to 75 at any time, Monday Ė Sunday)
  • Menís Permanent Supportive Housing (for disabled homeless men, 30 private apts)
  • Family Emergency Shelter (50 bed spaces)
  • Womenís Permanent Supportive Housing (6 apts)
  • Single Womenís Emergency Shelter (106 beds)
  • Single Womenís Transitional Shelter (10 beds)
  • Single Womenís Halfway Houses (11 spaces)
  • Womenís Day Shelter (Can accommodate up to†40 at any time, Monday Ė Sunday)
  • Safe Haven for mentally ill homeless women (10 beds)
  • Dining Hall (Three hot meals daily/every day of the year; also early breakfast and late supper for workers)
  • Chapel (Seats 91; Chapel services nightly in shelters, and Sunday morning and evening in Chapel)
  • Carl Nussbaum, Jr., Child Development Center (Serves homeless preschoolers staying in any Louisville-area homeless shelter at no charge to parents nor shelter)
  • Two thrift stores (9125 Galene Drive and 4930 Poplar Level Road)
  • Recovery Program (Provides 6 mo-1yr residential recovery program for homeless men and women at no charge)
  • Educational Classes (GED Classes on-site; Computer classes on-site; Literacy)
  • Discipleship Program/Job Training (Kitchen, auto mechanics, print shop, retail)†

Additional Programs

  • Down by the Wayside Choir - Gospel Choir composed of recovery clients (CDs available)
  • Miracle on Market Street Ė Christmas Program providing toys and food for over 6,000 persons annually
  • Back to School - Provides clothing and school supplies for homeless and formerly homeless school children
  • Celebration of Hope - Easter celebration for homeless families
  • KMA Bunny Run Ė Kentucky Motorcycle Association provides Easter baskets for homeless and formerly homeless children

Operation White Flag and Samaritan Patrol

  • Wayside van searches for homeless people who havenít made it into shelter
  • Wayside van transports people to safety of shelter
  • If persons donít wish to go to shelter, van leaves coffee, sandwiches, & blankets or sleeping bags in the winter, cool water and fruit in the summer
  • When temperatures are 35 degrees or lower in the winter, with or without wind chill, and when temperatures are 95 degrees or above in the summer, with or without the heat index, Operation White Flag is in effect.
  • Shelter rules are relaxed, allowing shelters to open over-flow areas and to accept persons we normally would not (due to behavior problems, no ID, etc.)
  • Shelter flies a White Flag outside the shelter, alerting homeless persons to dangerous conditions and the ability to enter the shelter, no questions asked.
  • Volunteers are called in to operate the Samaritan Patrol (See first three bullets above)
  • Operation Hospitality Volunteers are called in to provide additional care and services in the over-flow areas.
