“I had been in the grips of alcoholism for almost 30 years. I needed structure. With the work study program they have, along with the recovery program, you're able to piece your life back together and to live a totally different life than what you were in the past.”                  -- Barbara

What is addiction?

Addiction is simply defined as a physical craving and a mental obsession that make it nearly impossible to stop using on one’s own. It’s a progressive illness that gets worse over time.

The problem of addiction lies in the mind, which convinces us over and over that we can control our use and that next time will be different. But, without help, it won’t be.

The addiction is to drugs and/or alcohol (which is also a drug), so at Wayside, we treat the problem as an addiction to all mood-altering chemicals.

How do I get help?

Getting into our program is easy. There are no fees! Lodging and meals are included. Just call or text 502-345-9030 and our intake clerk will answer your questions, arrange transportation (if needed) and get you in a bed tonight.

Our Staff

Our primary recovery staff consists of people who are in recovery, who work a 12-Step program, and who have years of being clean and sober.  Some clients will become peer leaders and have the opportunity to teach classes.  Some of our peer support teachers are certified Adult Peer Support Specialists.

Mental Health

We work with a number of mental health clinics and agencies to make sure our clients get the additional help that they may need.

Physical Health

Local health care providers often provide free services and free prescriptions to most of our participants.  We make sure that our participants have access to healthcare.

Legal Problems?

We have an attorney on staff, licensed in three states including Kentucky and Indiana who can offer legal advice and direction to our participants who have legal problems. We also make progress and completion reports to judges, lawyers, prosecutors, alternative sentencing social workers, and probation officers if indicated. People needing treatment who are in the Jefferson Country Home Incarceration Program (HIP) can also participate in our programs.

Case Management

Each client will see a case manager and develop a treatment plan which will include alcohol and drug treatment, aftercare housing, and mental health and physical health plans.

Aftercare

Graduates of the Sober Living Program may enter long-term housing options at the Shelter or at Hotel Louisville.  This housing is at a reduced rate and can be permanent or transitional.  Many graduates secure outside employment, live on-site save money, then move out to a market-rate apartment.

Relapse Preventions

During Level 3, the final month of the program, our participants will be taught practical relapse prevention skills and will work through many potential relapse scenarios, helping them to prepare for the unexpected and how to resolve the temptations.  In addition, participants will develop a detailed relapse prevention plan to aid in recovery.

Additional Help

While in the program, learning the 12 Steps of recovery, our participants will also learn better ways to deal with strong emotions, smart ways to make decisions, and practical ways to resolve conflicts.  Our program includes cognitive therapy approach combined with lifeskills education, role-playing, and moral and situational dilemmas.
